When I started my artistic journey I often wondered how do i know that my painting is finished or when do stop rendering (because at the beginning you kinda think it's all about the rendering, right :p)? I have thought about that same question again now, and it does not confuse me anymore. The way i see it is, that you know your painting is finished when you have a consistent painting. Consistent in style, values, anatomy or whatever the subject of your painting is (it always shows if the artist has made conscious deliberate choices and understands their subject).
